Yeah, as the subject implies, I'm bored at work. My boss is gone for the day and didn't leave me any work to do. I knew he was going to be gone, so I came in an hour late. Now I think I'll leave an hour early. That would make a grand total of one hour worked today. Not that I will have done much work in this hour besides the usual cleaning up of the email folders which takes about five minutes. Oh, and obssessively hitting the refresh button to see if there are any new emails that I could possibly answer. Things to do today: Either eat before I leave here (11ish) or try to find another place with a microwave later or wait till 2ish and use the CS department microwave. Return library book to the SPEA/Business School library. Return library books to the public library See if there's anything I want to check out from the public library. Find out if I have any library fines or if my account is still magically immune from overdue fines. Meet Chris at 1:30. Go to the bank. Go to the CS department February birthdays party and eat free cake even though I'm not a CS student. See if Chris wants to go to the Pakistani cooking demonstration at 5 and RSVP if he does. Go home and clean or knit or write to Nancy or go for a walk, or hang around in town more. Make dinner if we're not going to the cooking demonstration. Possibly do something fun tonight since its Friday.

hm, hm, still waiting for any trick-or-treaters to come...we bought candy and even put a skeleton on our door...they only have less than 45 minutes left in the "official trick-or-treat time", so they better hurry up and get here! 'Cause at 8:30pm sharp I'm taking the shower that I should've done yesterday!
Now this is a sorry haul...and half my candy's nasty-flavored...coffee and banana, blech! |

This is for everybody that didn't get my email: My brother's band (Glass Halo) entered a contest to win a chance to open for Hanson (yes they're still around, no I don't listen to them and neither does he) and they made it to the finals! If they win they will play Nov. 13 in Cincinnati. They're competing with three other bands and need lots of people to vote for them on Hanson's website. Only one vote per computer is allowed. So, last Wednesday Chris and I went to a talk about "Peak Oil". I'd heard of the idea once before - briefly - but it made sense then, and what we heard at the talk was very convincing also. What it boils down to is that at some point oil will no longer be plentiful. And if you stop to think about it, it really does make sense geologically. It takes millions of years for oil to form, but we have been using oil so fast. We're pumping oil out of the ground far faster than it is forming. This has been known for a long time. That's why in school you learn about oil being a non-renewable resource. ( Read more... ) It's fairly certain that peak oil will happen eventually. With the current trends in the rates of oil usage (increasing) and oil discovery (decreasing), it is likely that peak oil will happen soon on the global scale. The big questions are when? and with what consequences? ( Read more... ) ...references and more thoughts coming later...right now I'm tired... Oh, and yes, of course there are people who say the whole peak oil thing is a false alarm or impossible or a conspiracy or an idea dreamt up by irrational loonies, but from what I've seen so far, those people are either ignoring or denying some obvious facts.
